Current Legislative News

On Feb. 21 a meeting was held in Nashville with representatives from TOOL, ETLA, MTLA and West Tennessee Locksmith Association. The TOOL Lobbyist Tommy Burnett was also in attendance. The topics of discussion were the proposed Locksmith Apprentice changes and the Registered Employee designation. As the deadline for submission of bills to the legislation is the end of February, it was decided to shelf the changes until next legislative session (next year).

There were quite a few terrific ideas about possible tweaks       to the law around apprentices. Raiford Ball will put together some details from what was discussed and send a draft out to all for approval for next year's Legislative session. I will post the draft as soon as it is ready for the membership's review.

Our group of WTLA members were all very encouraged and pleased with the process. I am confident the West Tennessee locksmiths, as well as Locksmiths in all of the other regions of the state, are welcome and have a voice in our Industry's License Laws. We need to continue to reach out and inform and include all Licenced Locksmiths in our state. I am still concerned about the high percentage of Licensed Locksmiths that are not part of the process and would hope they would consider joining one of the four established associations and become active participants.
